ICS Backup and Recovery

Industrial/ICS 🏭 Difficulty: premium

Definition

ICS backup and recovery safeguards control-system logic, configurations, and data by creating verified, offline copies and practiced restore procedures so plants can recover safely after failures or cyber incidents.

Examples

  • A water plant keeps offline, versioned backups of every PLC program, HMI project, and historian database and practices restoring them to spare hardware quarterly.
  • An outage corrupts an HMI server; the team restores the latest validated image and replays historian data from an immutable backup without touching running controllers.

In OT, recovery must be safe, fast, and predictable. Good backups are more than copies—they are documented, offline, and tested so that when a server or controller fails, you can return to a known-good state without endangering people or equipment. Unlike IT, you often cannot stop the process to experiment, so you prepare in calm times and rehearse restores until they are routine.
