Network Security
Definition
Network security is the set of controls and practices used to protect the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of data and services as they move across networks. It includes designing secure network architectures, controlling access, monitoring traffic, and responding to threats that target network communication.
Examples
- A company segments its internal network so employee laptops cannot directly reach sensitive database servers.
- An organization uses firewalls, VPNs, and MFA to control remote access to internal services.

Networks connect everything: users, servers, cloud services, and devices. That connectivity is what makes modern organizations work, but it also creates pathways attackers can use. Network security focuses on controlling those pathways. It aims to ensure that only the right traffic can flow, that risky traffic is detected quickly, and that a compromise in one area does not automatically spread everywhere.
