PROFINET

Industrial/ICS 🏭 • Protocols 🔗 Difficulty: premium

Definition

PROFINET is an industrial Ethernet protocol that delivers cyclic real-time I/O (RT) and deterministic isochronous control (IRT), using standardized device models (GSDML), name/IP assignment via DCP, and rich diagnostics for factory automation.

Examples

  • An IO-Controller exchanges 4 ms cyclic I/O with distributed IO-Devices while engineering tools perform acyclic parameter writes without disturbing the scan.
  • A packaging line uses Media Redundancy Protocol (MRP) so an open ring keeps running if a cable fails.

Discover 🔎

PROFINET carries industrial control over standard Ethernet with two service classes. Real-Time (RT) prioritizes cyclic I/O with low jitter for general automation. Isochronous Real-Time (IRT) adds time-slot scheduling for sub-millisecond, deterministic motion and high-precision sync. Devices present themselves through a common model described by GSDML files, which lets different vendors interoperate cleanly.
