What is PROFINET?
PROFINET is an industrial Ethernet protocol that delivers cyclic real-time I/O (RT) and deterministic isochronous control (IRT), using standardized device models (GSDML), name/IP assignment via DCP, and rich diagnostics for factory automation.

- An IO-Controller exchanges 4 ms cyclic I/O with distributed IO-Devices while engineering tools perform acyclic parameter writes without disturbing the scan.
- A packaging line uses Media Redundancy Protocol (MRP) so an open ring keeps running if a cable fails.
