SNMP
Definition
SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) is a protocol used to monitor, manage, and configure network devices such as routers, switches, servers, and printers from a centralized system.
Examples
- A network administrator uses SNMP to monitor bandwidth usage on a router.
- An SNMP server collects system health metrics from hundreds of devices across an enterprise network.
Overview
SNMP is a widely used protocol that enables administrators to collect and organize information about devices on an IP network, and to remotely manage them. Itβs especially useful in medium to large environments where manual device monitoring would be inefficient or impractical.
Using SNMP, centralized management tools can query devices for data like CPU usage, memory consumption, disk status, or interface traffic β and even issue commands to configure settings or trigger alerts. SNMP operates as a lightweight, standardized framework, making it compatible with a wide range of hardware and software vendors.
